¡Hola! Chicago Clerkships is offering live, low-cost, online small-group classes for those who wish to learn the basics of medical Spanish.

Spanish language skills have become increasingly necessary for healthcare providers in the United States. For roughly 53 million people residing in the US, Spanish is their native language or they are bilingual (raised speaking both languages equally). There are more people speaking Spanish in the US than in Spain, Colombia, Argentina or any other Latin American country with the exception of Mexico. By 2050, the Instituto Cervantes expects the US to have 138 million Spanish speakers.

Classes begin on May 4, 2020 and are offered via Zoom conferencing, and are open to Chicago Clerkships clients and others through an online membership program.

Each session will be 50 minutes long and utilize what is called the “direct” or “natural” method where teaching is conducted in the target language. We will use drawings, written materials, and photos to convey basic messages , as well as call and response, and lots of aural/verbal repetition.

Language learning sessions are organized in 4-week cycles starting on the first Monday of each month.
Beginners  —   Monday and Wednesday at 9am US Central Standard time
Intermediate  —  Tuesday and Thursday at 9am US Central Standard time.   Intermediate level requires 10-minute pre-registration interview.
Format:
1: Introductions and class overview in English (5 minutes)
2: Basic grammar module, taught in Spanish, (20 minutes)
3. Beginner: Medical topic focus:  anatomy, symptoms, conditions, etc., taught in Spanish (15 minutes)
    Intermediate classes:  Mock patient module, taught in Spanish (15 minutes)
4. Clarifications and resources, in English (10 minutes)

Fees:
Chicago Clerkships current and past clients, $150 per 4-week session, includes 8 classes and one 30 minute private lesson per month.
Non-clients, $200 per 4-week session, includes 8 classes only.

Requirements:  Ability to connect online with audio and visual capabilities.
